Is there proof that God exists?

Not in the sense of a math proof or a lab result, and honest believers should not claim otherwise. The case is more like a courtroom or a history book. A build-up of things that are easier to explain if God exists than if not, ending in one claim you can actually investigate.

Is not absence of evidence evidence of absence?

Only when you would expect to see the evidence if the thing were real. You would find an elephant in your kitchen by looking. You would not find the author of a novel by searching its pages. The real disagreement is about what kind of thing God is, and so what would count as evidence.

Does not science explain everything without God?

Science explains how things behave inside the universe extremely well. It does not, and by its method cannot, explain why there is a law-abiding universe at all, or why it is readable by minds. Those questions sit under science, not inside it.

What is the one thread you can actually check?

The claim that Jesus of Nazareth was crucified and then seen alive by many witnesses. Unlike the others, that is a historical claim about a specific event, and it is where the case for God stops being abstract.
